Fearless Hearts and Great Pumpkins, Redux

Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin
Linus waits in his oh so sincere pumpkin patch.

I know it’s cheating, but I really like this little post from Halloween two years ago. Because I think Linus has a fearless heart, and that’s the lesson of the Great Pumpkin: let go of disappointment and let yourself hope (or love) again, no matter how ridiculous it seems to the Lucy’s of this world.

October, 2010

“To get through this life with any kind of self-respect at all, you need two things: an inquisitive mind, and a fearless heart.” –Steve Earle.

Like Linus waiting for the Great Pumpkin – Linus has a fearless heart, one that’s been broken many times before, and he just comes back for more. You could call that kind of faith and optimism stupid, like Lucy does. And you wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. But for some reason tonight I’m hoping against hope that the Great Pumpkin visits me on Halloween night and leaves me a fearless heart, too.

I still need reminders of that lesson just about every day. And, I still love that Steve Earle song. Give it a listen –
