On the 30th of each month, a guest author shares his or her take on how fiction of all kinds can teach us important lessons about being human. I’m thrilled to welcome the first installment, from the lovely and talented Diana Green. Since her childhood, growing up in New Zealand, Diana has been an avid storyteller. For years she enjoyed teaching art and special education, while continuing to write as a hobby. After she developed chronic fatigue syndrome, a career change was necessary, but happily this led her to become a professional author. Diana’s favorite genres are fantasy, science fiction, historical, and romance. She currently lives in beautiful Washington State where she writes for Champagne Books and The Wild Rose Press.
Welcome, Diana! Find information about her books and more following her tale.
“Ships may be safe in the harbor, but that’s not what ships were made for.”
Though I don’t remember where I first heard this quote, the truth of it rings like a bell. Fulfillment cannot always be found by playing it safe. Sometimes we have to be daring and stretch ourselves, to discover our potential.
In my sci-fi novel, New Sion, the character Finn finds herself in a time of rapid growth and challenge. She has lived for years within a certain routine and lifestyle, avoiding too much contact with others and protecting herself from hurt. Through the course of the novel, she is forced to leave this “safe harbor” and venture into unfamiliar waters.
She begins to develop a close relationship with Eamon, her new bounty hunting partner, and this intimacy scares her. At first she pulls away from him, but gradually she begins to shed her inhibitions. As she becomes bolder in her willingness to connect with Eamon, she also becomes a happier, more confident woman. The very thing that frightens her, is also an opportunity for greater wholeness.
There are many times in life when we have to push ourselves out of our comfort zone, in order to grow and thrive. Right now, with my family, this is happening in abundance. My son has gone off to his first year of University. My husband has returned to school, to change careers, and I have plunged into the fascinating world of becoming a professional author.
All these paths require courage and faith, but without moving forward along them, we would stagnate. After all, our primary reason for being here, isn’t to maintain safety. It is to live, fully and well.
